Newsletter of 4th March 2004
The following newsletter was e-mailed to
our circulation list on 4th March 2004.
Welcome to the first update of 2004 from Sariah
Arabians.
Showing News
Two months of 2004 are already over and our
thoughts are turning to spring, and the new showing and holiday
seasons. We have been preparing by attending the South East
Area Arab Horse Society (SERAHS) In Hand and Ridden clinics
held at the Diamond Centre at Carshalton in Surrey. We attended
all three Ridden clinics, taken by Pat Smedley which were
excellent learning experiences for both horses and riders.
The first was attended by Karen Padbury riding Sariah's Solitaire
and the second by Sue Griffin with Sariah's Sapphire - the
first time of attending showing classes for both riders. For
the third event both riders attended with Sariah's Solitaire
and Bal Sonoma.
We hope to attend a number of shows this year
with Sariah's Shalimar who will be shown In Hand by Emma Maxwell
and others. The schedule is:
- 25 April - SERAHS Indoor show at Ardingly
- 31 May - Stoke Park Spring Bank Holiday Show in Guildford
- 7 June - Hocun (Home Counties) Arab Horse Society in
Essex
- 10/11 - June South of England Horse Show at Ardingly
- 19 June - SERAHS Summer Arab Show at Ardingly
For those interested in learning what it takes
to prepare a horse to a professional showing standard we are
putting together a show committee which will be responsible
for preparing for the shows. Please email info@sariaharabians.com
if you would be interested in taking part in our show committee.
No experience is necessary but expertise with a squeegee bottle
is a help, and of course, if you are free on show day we would
appreciate as much support as possible.
Riding Activities
As ever, we are intending to take part in a
variety of rides throughout the year. Some of the events we
expect to attend are listed below. If you are interested in
taking part with one of our horses, then please let us know.
We can arrange transport and it is an enjoyable day out for
everyone. Due to the organisation which is required there
is a maximum of four to six horses and riders for each event,
and prices will depend on the number of people sharing the
horsebox.
- 9 April (Good Friday): 11 mile ride over the Surrey Hills.
Maximum of six riders.
- 12 April (Easter Monday) : Sariah Arabians day out! Come
and enjoy a morning of instruction and an afternoon hack
(3 hours in the saddle during the day). Lunch is likely
to be at one of our lovely local pubs. Maximum of six riders.
- 25 April: Frensham Cross Country sponsored ride. Ten
miles with 40 optional cross country jumps (2'6" to
2'9"). A minimum donation applies of £7-00 and
a minimum sponsorship of £17-00 per team (of 4 riders).
Maximum of four riders. Full details are available (for
those with Adobe Acrobat Reader) at:
http://www.ridingdiary.co.uk/details.asp?EventID=7138
- 1 & 2 May: Windsor Great Park Sponsored ride. We
will take a maximum of six people for this fun day. The
photograph of Sariah's Shalom on our web site was taken
at the 2003 Windsor ride. The ride takes place one of two
days over the weekend depending on demand.
Please email info@sariaharabians
for bookings.
Riding Holidays
As a new venture, this year you will be able
to bring your own horse on holidays to Sariah Arabians for
a break. We have arrangements with local B&B to accommodate
riders. These range from the local Youth Hostel to lovely
cottages in the area, and we can provide a list of addresses
on request. The riding is through our lovely Surrey Hills
and maps of the area can be provided.
Other Dates for your Diary
- 22 March is the local SERAHS annual general meeting which
will include a video of the visit to AV Arabians last September
which we attended.
- 29/31 July is the main national Arab Horse Society show
in the Malvern Hills. This is a must for anyone interested
in the Arabian Horse.
News of our Horses
Marigold recently had an accident in her field
which resulted in a nasty gash on her hock which has meant
box rest for the last few weeks. After feeling sorry for herself
for a few days her natural character has shone though and
is feeling left out when the other horses go out on rides.
Box rest has been made easy by the continuous throughput of
carrots which she has received from well wishers!
We are also very pleased that Myfanwy has been
bought by Roger and Gail Urwin, who also own Sariah's Sarah.
Myfanwy will continue with us at livery along with Sariah's
Sarah.
Woody (Llangaren Enigma) has been purchased
by Karen Padbury as a companion to her pure bred Arabian Piccolo.
We hope Karen has some strong fences in her field to curtail
Woody's Houdini impressions!
Other news
A new web site specifically for horse owners
seeking advice and information from Government has been launched.
The site has advice on a range of topics from accessibility
of riding routes to welfare, information on breeding, sections
on racing and a tourism section. You can find the web site
at:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/horses/
The International League for the Protection
of Horses (ILPH), a leading horse charity has run an online
petition, raising over 27,000 signatures to protest against
new legislation which is about to be passed in the European
Union that could well open the floodgates for British horses
to be exported live for slaughter. This year could see the
resumption of a trade that has not taken place from Britain
for 67 years, where lorries loaded with horses and ponies
are transported across the Channel to be killed for human
consumption in European slaughterhouses. We at Sariah Arabians
have written to the Secretary of State and have signed the
online petition to stop the resumption of this trade. The
details of the legislation and action taken by the ILPH are
on:
http://www.ilph.org
Best wishes to you all and we look forward
to seeing you soon.
